In 2007, Elaine Weiner embarked on a 3-year research project to explore how the Czech state and its citizens accommodated legislation-mandated as a prerequisite of European Union accession - on equal opportunity/equal treatment of women and men. To date, much of the scholarship on the European Union's enlargement eastward has focused on East European states' compliance and most especially their noncompliance with European Union stipulates. Comparatively little attention has been paid to how citizens - that is, ordinary women and men - construe these reforms. This case study takes up this question from the vantage point of Czech citizens using vignettes as an ideal means of tapping into apprehension and awareness about the inequalities that underlie equal opportunity/equal treatment laws, and recourse(s) available - legal and/or otherwise.
