This case summary explores some of the realities that social researchers may be confronted with when using documents as a form of data for the first time. Using the author's work with Myra Hindley's 'prison files' as a case example, currently available for viewing in The National Archives of the United Kingdom, the summary first introduces the idea of indirect data, and why the labels 'primary' and 'secondary' are not helpful, before going on to discuss what is meant by a document and why they are useful forms of indirect data in particular.
