This work introduces readers to the Pearson's chi-squared test for independence (X2). This technique allows researchers to test whether or not two categorical variables are associated with each other. This example uses a subset of data from the 2006 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) 2006 survey of adults. It presents a test of the relationship between gender and smoking behaviour in China. Medical experts warn that cigarettes currently kill one million people in China every year, with this expected to triple by 2030. Results from an analysis like this could have implications for public health policy.
