This work introduces researchers to two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Two-way ANOVA is an extension of one-way ANOVA that allows researchers to examine the influence of two different categorical variables on one continuous variable. Two-way ANOVA lets researchers assess the main effect of each categorical variable on the continuous variable in question as well as the interactive effect of the two categorical variables combined. This example uses a subset of data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) at the National Center for Education Statistics, 2012 to examine whether college graduation rates in the United States differ across types of university as well as across regions of the country.
