Researchers weight data to help make sure that the sample of data they have for analysis reflects the population from which it was drawn. Here the use of weights for both a categorical and a continuous variable is illustrated using a subset of data from the 2012 American National Election Study. Specifically, the frequency distribution of reported party identification and the mean value for how respondents feel about the Democratic party is examined.
