This dataset example introduces researchers to the Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient, which is a non-parametric measure of association between two ordinal, interval or ratio-level variables. The Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient measures whether there is a positive or negative monotonic relationship between two such variables. This example uses a subset of data from the Consolidated State Performance Report from the U.S. Department of Education. It looks specifically at the correlation between the percentage of high school students who were proficient in science and the percentage of high school students who are proficient in reading in 2011-2012 across all 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Understanding the relationship between these variables might help policymakers shape more effective education policies.
