Online resources: This dataset exemplar discusses the use of interpretative approaches to grounded theory in the analysis of elite interviews. Grounded theory was developed by Glaser and Strauss in 1967 and involves the generation of theory through observation. Various approaches to grounded theory have since emerged. The dataset is provided by Dr Patrizia Kokot from the University of Reading and considers how we approach elite interviews as researchers, and the ways in which grounded theory may be appropriately adapted to address the research needs of the project. The examples provided highlight the importance of interpretative approaches to qualitative analysis. Interpretative paradigms consider the world as one that may be collectively discovered through shared understandings (Riley, Schouten, & Cahill, 2003). In elite interviews, in particular, there is a danger of treating respondent accounts as objective truth, rather than subjective representations of experience. Delaney (2007) refers to concerns of this nature as dilemmas of seduction. This dataset exemplar also discusses practical concerns surrounding the methodological commitments we make. How do you conduct an interview with an elite? How do you manage the interview? The dataset will be most useful for those embarking on their first interviews with elites, and those who are still thinking about their methodology.
