The overwhelming majority of current faculty retirement research focuses on how institutions manage the economic implications of retirement, particularly retirement benefits and the financial costs to the institution. There has been little scholarship to date exploring the topic of retirement from the individual retirees perspective. Recently retired faculty may harbor different retirement expectations and the level of relationship they intend to maintain with their former institution. This research examines this topic further.This qualitative study provides an in-depth analysis of 14 faculty emeriti from a large US university and explores their relationships with their former institutions. Using the literature about adult development and the professoriate, a semi-structured, in-depth interview protocol was developed. Data analysis was conducted using a grounded theory approach with an emphasis on thematic findings.Within this case study, I will highlight some of the anticipated and unanticipated challenges I faced while conducting my research. I will provide reflective commentary about how I managed these challenges and how I would have handled some of those challenges differently. I will also address less discussed aspects of research, such as valuing and respecting research participants.
