This case study illustrates my experience using mixed methods to describe the personal characteristics of a group of outstanding home visitors who worked with new mothers and their babies. This case illustrates the stages of refining a research question, choosing the research method, and analyzing data and demonstrates how these stages are interconnected. At the start of this research, I would describe myself as a quantitative researcher, but my research question lent itself to qualitative methods. This dilemma was complicated by my underlying bias toward quantitative research. I tried to compromise by utilizing mixed methods, but the resulting quantitative data did not yield as much as the qualitative data. In the end, I formed a greater respect for qualitative research methods.
