The high prevalence of HIV among incarcerated populations has led practitioners and researchers to view correctional institutions as necessary places to intervene with public health efforts. In this methods case, I walk you through the sampling and recruitment methods used for my dissertation, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, to explore the individual- and structural-level barriers and facilitators to continuous HIV care for individuals with a history of incarceration. Data for this study came from 30 in-depth interviews with formerly incarcerated individuals living with HIV. Recruiting from vulnerable populations for interviews requires careful thought, planning, and early efforts at building rapport with members of the population, or with a gatekeepera key individual who represents and has access to the population. Human subjects and ethical concerns for the protection and safety of the study participants and yourself as the researcher are especially pertinent when recruiting vulnerable individuals to be interviewed. Participants in this study were directly recruited by staff at an HIV program. The findings from this study address why disruptions in HIV treatment are prevalent for this population and provide suggestions for how to improve some of these issues from an analytic perspective, and also from the perspective of the individuals themselves.
