Acupuncture, a licensed health profession in the United States, is poorly integrated into the American healthcare system, despite the evidence of its effectiveness. As an acupuncturist employed by a hospital, I was interested in the process of acupuncture integration within biomedical care. Together with two colleagues, I conducted a phenomenological research study to understand the experience of acupuncturists who delivered acupuncture inpatient care in a tertiary teaching hospital in New York City. This case discusses how my study began, how I chose the methodology, and how I carried out the research. I share my strengths and limitations as a phenomenological researcher and the ethical issues I had to consider.
