This case study focuses on an online HIV peer-helping platform that was developed through a community-based research approach. Community-based research is a process-focused and relationship-oriented approach to research. It facilitates partnership between multiple groups such as academic researchers and community members to carry out relevant and practical research. Research relationships are egalitarian, and open communication is a hallmark of the approach. This case study explores the background information on the HIV peer-helping platform to provide a foundation for discussing community-based research in practice. The philosophy underlying community-based research is considered along with specific practicalities of the methods. The work of community-based research is examined through this case study example, including specific practical examples of the approach in action as well as some example lessons learned through employing the approach.
