This article delineates the trajectory of doing ethnographic research on sexual violence in Gujarat, India. It elucidates the ethnographic research design and draws out the practicalities of conducting interviews, making observations and keeping reflective notes. It showcases the nuanced local understanding of the survivor's experience afforded by ethnography and it draws out the invaluable grounded understanding of the field that fieldwork affords. So, it highlights the challenges faced by the researcher, such as lack of privacy, stigma attached to sexual violence, power relationships in the field. It suggests some workable solutions, particularly investing time and effort in selecting appropriate settings for interviews, building rapport and trust with respondents and gatekeepers, sharpening one's interviewing and field note taking skills.
