Online resources: In this case study, I describe what inspired me to choose an unusual source of data, namely, pet cemetery memorial plaques. The study was designed to focus on the potentially changing conceptions of family in terms of both the relationship between people and their pets, particularly as it relates to loving and family relationships, and the ways in which individuals choose to list themselves on pet memorial plaques. The sample consisted of more than 2,000 memorial plaques in a pet cemetery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This case study explains a number of obstacles that were encountered in the process of collecting the data and the decisions that were made to both overcome these obstacles and develop an appropriate coding scheme and method for analyzing the data.
