All typically developing children acquire the ability to pretend early in childhood. Yet, despite its ubiquity, much remains to be discovered about its role in children's overall cognitive and social development. Importantly, are other key psychological traits and abilities related to pretending? If so, are they simply correlated or do any affect pretending ability? The study described in this case sought to discover the nature of the relationship between 3-year-olds' pretending and mental control abilities. The challenges (and pleasures) of studying pretend play, studying young children, and studying change over time are explored and discussed.
