This case study examines the utility of the self-report essay as a method of data collection. The account describes the research process for a study on motivations for peer influence toward or away from criminal behavior. Using this study as an example, I illustrate the practical application of the self-report essay, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of this method. This case study primarily centers around methodological issues of sample-selection, coding decisions, reliability, cost, and measurement of variables.
