Online resources: How is content analysis used to identify, extract, and analyze non-standardized data on public email list servers? My case study links descriptive outcomes, the role of the researcher, and the specific benefits and drawbacks of publicly available online data. In my case study, I use content analysis to identify policy decisions for Internet standards in emailed contributions from computer engineers who debated computer cookie technologies long before the rise of corporate Internet giants. Content analysis facilitates an embedded understanding for past Internet policy decisions which have heavily shaped the way we use the web today. The group consists of volunteers who need to reach a rough consensus. which means that unanimous decisions are not required, but a majority needs to agree on a proposal or the proposed standard will be dropped.
