This teaching case is collated from actual events over the period March 2011 to September 2016 within a rural healthcare context in the Central Karoo district of South Africa. The principle research was conducted in September 2016. Twenty-two semi-structured interviews were considered for thematic alignment with the learning objectives alongside documentary evidence from the area under study. The name of one location and several characters were changed to protect the anonymity of participants. The case describes a number of episodes in the journey of the leader to provide grounds for reader analysis of the situation (Mesny & Mandron, 2014). An account of leadership initiating change, motivating employees and encouraging employee engagement is presented. Resistance to change, as well as staff training and retention are also key themes in the narrative.
