Online resources: In 2006, McKesson Technologies sued Epic Systems for inducing infringement of its 8̀98 patent by licensing MyChart software to healthcare providers. The McKesson 8̀98 patented invention allows patients, doctors, and healthcare providers to access an interactive communication system through a cloud-based platform that contains a personalized web page with useful information about and for each patient. Epic's MyChart is a software program licensed to healthcare providers: these providers can choose whether to offer MyChart software as an option for their patients, and patients can decide to communicate with the provider by logging on to the healthcare provider's MyChart web page. Although the parties settled the suit, this case study invites students to consider the issues raised.
