Koreeda Hirokazu, a major figure in Japanese film history who was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, has achieved considerable commercial success as an independent filmmaker. His films delicately explore the challenges we all face nowadays in Japan and, more broadly, in our societies of advanced capitalism.Known and renowned both in Japan and internationally for his deep interest in family, his most famous chronicles—Nobody Knows, Like Father Like Son, Shoplifters…—as well as his genre films—Air Doll, The Third Murder, Monster…—go beyond mere thematic illustration. By adopting the points of view of populations usually invisible in mainstream representations—women, children, and the elderly—his films invite us to reconsider how we perceive today's social realities. This book questions the power of film in social history and explores its capacities as a response to contemporary social anxieties and as a tool of reappropriation for every viewer. By setting up alternative points of view, Koreeda's work opens a space between the film and the viewer, thus allowing a reorganisation of our relation to others and reality, just as the ideal family would. Yet, ideal does not mean perfect.
