In the early-modern age, edicts were among the documents most frequently used by institutions to communicate rules and laws to the people. Their circulation was entrusted to the town criers, whose read out these documents before the public and affixed copies in the most representative and crowded places of the cities. Thus, a very large number of edicts were able to be produced throughout Europe (both in manuscript and printed form) to make the latest provisions known and observed. This book sets out to examine some of the characteristics of the edicts found in 16th-century Milan and to shed light on the main channels through which they were disseminated, identify the actors involved in the production of these documents and the means of their production. The study takes into consideration equally manuscript and typographic production, attempting to demonstrate the social functions of these documents and their importance to the society of the period. To enrich the volume, a census of Milanese typographic edicts produced in the 16th century is offered as an appendix.

Durante l'età moderna le gride furono tra i documenti maggiormente utilizzati dalle istituzioni per comunicare al popolo regole e norme da seguire. La loro circolazione era affidata ai preconi, che con la loro voce dovevano rendere i documenti pubblici, affiggendone inoltre copia nei luoghi più rappresentativi e frequentati delle città. In tutta Europa se ne producevano quindi in numero amplissimo (sia in forma manoscritta che a stampa) nel tentativo di far conoscere e osservare le più recenti disposizioni. Questo libro intende studiare alcuni caratteri delle gride della Milano cinquecentesca per mettere in luce quali fossero i principali canali attraverso cui erano diffuse, chi fossero gli attori che entravano in gioco nella produzione di questi documenti e come venissero prodotti. Lo studio guarda in egual misura ai prodotti manoscritti e a quelli tipografici, cercando di mostrare quali fossero le funzioni sociali di questi documenti e che importanza rivestirono nella società del periodo. Ad arricchire il volume viene offerto in appendice un censimento delle gride tipografiche milanesi prodotte nel Cinquecento.
