The starting point for discussion in this book was the need to reflect on the various forms of the existence of the nineteenth century in our present. The need to go beyond the existing fields of knowledge of nineteenth-century culture seems pressing: a certain attempt at 'consolidating' the ways in which the knowledge of that century is shaped, as well as how it is read, received, re-worked, utilised or recalled in various circles of culture, from professional knowledge, to literature of various niches, popularisation, essay-writing, cinematic and series interpretations, the Internet or video games. At the moment, discernment from the academic circles does not penetrate other areas of culture well: it is worth trying to change this status quo. At the centre of the book there is the most famous novel by BolesławPrus. Before this topic is discussed, however, the book pays some attention to its author (a somewhat underappreciated figure who is seen as boring), as well as the novel's character, who seems to be a being of a far more significant status in Polish culture. The work also takes the opportunity to de-mystify the character, whom masses of readers would fall in love with over the decades.
