The volume you hold in your hands is part of a work that has been published in two installments: first, an anthology edition already released, Genius and Wit of the Judeo-Andalusian Poet, Miguel/Daniel Leví de Barrios (Montilla, Córdoba, 1635 – Amsterdam, 1701; Málaga, UMA, 2024); and now, the paleographic and holographic reproduction most closely aligned with the author's editorial intent, established critically on a documented basis. It is also complemented by an entire corpus of manuscripts, unpublished or little known until now. This is the work of a convert, or New Christian, who later continued practicing Judaism within the bilingual Sephardic community—Spanish and Portuguese, primarily—of Amsterdam, and who had already begun as a crypto-Jew, in an initiatory manner and with little theological foundation, in his native Montilla. It therefore offers the particular interest of the literary production of an ethno-religious minority, to which is added the use of a variety of Castilian and Portuguese distinct from that of the Iberian Peninsula, and quite distant from the Judeo-Spanish of his coreligionists expelled in 1492. Daniel Leví de Barrios composed approximately 1,300 poems out of the 1,800 written in that community during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries—that is, 70%. Although in smaller proportion, the manuscript work of Leví de Barrios also represents a significant percentage within the corpus of this community as it has been estimated until now. The autograph works and the apographs of Miguel de Barrios, especially the one known as MS. 711 Lansdowne, have not—despite the fame and recognition the author has gained in the field of philology over the past two decades—been the subject of a detailed analysis of his handwriting.

El ejemplar que tienes en tus manos es parte de una obra que se ha ofrecido en dos entregas: primero, una edición-antología aparecida ya: Genio e Ingenio del Poeta Judeo-Andaluz, Miguel / Daniel Leví de Barrios (Montilla, Córdoba 1635-Ámsterdam 1701, Málaga, UMA, 2024, y, ahora, la reproducción paleográfica y holográfica más cercana a la voluntad editorial de su autor, establecida críticamente sobre base documentada. Se completa también con todo un corpus manuscrito, inédito o poco conocido hasta ahora. Se trata de la obra de un converso o cristiano nuevo que, con posterioridad, continuó practicando el judaísmo en la Comunidad bilingüe sefardí –español y portugués, fundamentalmente– de Ámsterdam y que ya había iniciado como criptojudío, de manera iniciática y con poco fundamento teológico, en su Montilla natal. Ofrece, por tanto, el interés particular de la producción literaria de una minoría étnico-religiosa, al que se añade el uso de un castellano y un portugués, diferenciado del uso de los mismos idiomas en el ámbito peninsular y muy lejano del judeoespañol de sus correligionarios expulsos en 14923. Daniel Leví de Barrios creó, aproximadamente, unos 1300 poemas de los 1800 que se escribieron en esa Comunidad durante los siglos XVI y XVII, es decir, el 70%. Pues, aunque en menor proporción, la obra manuscrita de Leví de Barrios representa también un porcentaje significativo dentro del corpus, hasta ahora estimado, de esta Comunidad referida. La obra autógrafa y los apógrafos de Miguel de Barrios, especialmente el conocido como MS. 711 Lansdowne no ha contado, pese a la fama y difusión que el autor ha adquirido en el panorama de la Filología en las dos últimas décadas, con un análisis detallado de su escritura.
