The life of Zhong Shuhe, editor, scholar, and essayist, is a testament to perseverance and the enduring impact of thoughtful publishing. Born in 1931, Zhong Shuhe faced hardship early in life, including dismissal during the Anti-Rightist Campaign and a decade of imprisonment. After his rehabilitation, he embarked on a remarkable career as an editor, becoming a leading figure in Chinese publishing. He is best known for the "Marching Towards The World Series," which unearthed previously unknown accounts of the outside world from the late Qing Dynasty, profoundly shaping Chinese understanding of the world during a period of dramatic change. He also edited the "Complete Works of Zeng Guofan," "Classical Masterpieces Popular Library," and "Complete Essays of Zhou Zuoren." Despite this adversity, Zhong Shuhe's commitment to bridging tradition and global civilization earned him the 2017 "Special Contribution Award" at the East Asian Publishers Conference. Zhong Shuhe's story is a Quixotic one, a reminder that even amidst adversity, knowledge and vision can enlighten a generation.
