In this book, the author analyzes the history of the concept and notion of "primitive art" against the backdrop of changing political, social, and cultural circumstances over more than five centuries. The starting point is the processes of colonization and their consequences for Europe's perception of the New World, its inhabitants, culture, and art. After all, as Hans Belting wrote, the history of colonization was also a "war of images." On the basis of the theory of collecting, intertwined with issues from the theory of art, museology, aesthetics, anthropology, political science, and history, Hanna Schreiber examines the ways of collecting and methods of exhibiting non-European artifacts, from the first private cabinets of curiosities in the 16th century to selected contemporary collections and museum exhibitions. Through an analysis of the most important theoretical writings and artistic events, she identifies turning points in the formation of the image of "primitive art" in the Western universe of art and museums, dominated by a Eurocentric perspective.

W prezentowanej książce autorka analizuje historię pojęcia i koncepcji "sztuki prymitywnej" na tle zmieniających się w ciągu ponad pięciu wieków okoliczności politycznych, społecznych i kulturowych. Punktem wyjścia są procesy kolonizacji i ich konsekwencje dla sposobów postrzegania przez Europę Nowego Świata, jego mieszkańców, kultury i sztuki. W końcu, jak pisal Hans Belting, historia kolonizacji była też "wojną obrazów". Na gruncie teorii kolekcjonerstwa, przeplatanej zagadnieniami z teorii sztuki, muzealnictwa, estetyki, antropologii, politologii i historii, Hanna Schreiber rozpatruje sposoby zbierania i metody wystawiania artefaktów pozaeuropejskich, od pierwszych prywatnych gabinetów osobliwości w XVI wieku do wybranych współczesnych kolekcji i wystaw muzealnych. Dzięki analizie najważniejszych pism teoretycznych i wydarzeń artystycznych wskazuje punkty zwrotne dla kształtowania się wizerunku "sztuki prymitywnej" w zdominowanym przez europocentryczną perspektywę zachodnim uniwersum sztuki i muzeów.
