Através de textos de autores portugueses, brasileiros e angolanos, do século XIX até hoje, neste livro procuro mostrar que um pensamento ecologicamente motivado pode facultar acesso a aspetos pertinentes de certos livros, desdobrando em superfícies mais amplas a atenção que lhes prestamos. Em larga medida, estas incursões no campo da ecocrítica tratam-na não como um ponto de vista particularmente adequado para examinar o imaginário ambiental veiculado pela literatura, mas como um vocabulário particularmente útil para relacionar a imaginação literária com o pensamento ecológico. Num sentido muito prático, procuro aqui seguir um conselho oportuno do líder indígena Ailton Krenak — "Quando você sentir que o céu está ficando muito baixo, é só empurrá-lo e respirar" —, extraindo algumas consequências da ideia de que um livro que respira é um livro que se expande sobre o espaço que o comporta.

Through texts by Portuguese, Brazilian and Angolan authors, from the 19th century to the present day, in this book I attempt to show that ecologically motivated thinking can provide access to pertinent aspects of certain books, unfolding on wider surfaces the attention we pay to them. To a large extent, these forays into the field of ecocriticism treat it not as a standpoint particularly suited to examining the environmental imaginary conveyed by literature, but as a particularly useful vocabulary for relating literary imagination to ecological thinking. In a very practical sense, I seek here to follow a timely piece of advice from the indigenous leader Ailton Krenak - "When you feel that the sky is getting too low, just push it away and breathe" - by drawing some consequences from the idea that a book that breathes is a book that expands upon the space that holds it.
