The 442 epigrams contained in book XI of the Greek Anthology are the best sample of the genre of Greek satirical epigram, from Classical to the Byzantine era. Nonetheless, the anonymous scribe of the Palatinus made an internal division between sympotic (sympotika, num. 1-64) and satirical (skoptika, num. 65-442) epigrams. Full of meaning are his words on these components: "A great use has forever been done of satirical epigrams, since men is so fond on laughing on others and listening them laughing on their neighbors, something I believe that always happened between the Ancients, as the following epigrams demonstrate."

Os 442 epigramas que constituem o livro XI da Antologia Grega constituem uma a melhor mostra do género do epigrama satírico da antiguidade grega, da época clássica à bizantina. Ainda assim, o anónimo escriba do Palatinus estabeleceu uma subdivisão interna, entre poemas ditos "de banquete" (sympotika, núms. 1-64) e "burlescos" (skoptika, núms. 65-442). Reveladoras são as suas palavras sobre estes componentes: "Amplo uso se fez, ao longo da vida, dos epigramas burlescos, dado que o homem tanto gosta de burlar-se dos outros como de ouvir os outros a burlar-se do próximo, algo que, estou em crer, sempre aconteceu entre os antigos, como se mostrará com os epigramas seguintes"
