The book The Indigenous Movement in Brazil: From Tutelage to Protagonism (1974–1988), organized by researchers in the field of Indigenous studies Dr. Clovis Antonio Brighenti, professor of History at UNILA, and Egon Dionisio Heck, Master in Political Science from Unicamp and member of Cimi, is a collection of 13 articles divided into three parts. It also includes a preface written by anthropologist João Pacheco de Oliveira, full professor at the National Museum (UFRJ). The work fills an important temporal gap in Brazilian indigenist historiography, spanning from the early 1970s until the enactment of the Federal Constitution of 1988. This was a crucial period in Indigenous history in Brazil, when Indigenous peoples were being violently decimated both physically—by the "modernization" projects of the military governments—and culturally, through the proposed legislation of Indigenous integration into the national community. This book examines how Indigenous peoples in Brazil overcame the notions of state tutelage and integration, paving the way for the recognition of their social organization, languages, customs, beliefs, and traditions. The first part is dedicated to the Indigenous movement, the assemblies, and the organizations that emerged, and it includes an article written by Nailton of the Pataxó People of Bahia, a protagonist in this process. The second part focuses on specific contexts of Indigenous actions and mobilizations, especially in the struggle for land rights. The third part is dedicated to analyzing state policies and the mobilizations against integration, as well as the efforts toward changing the legal framework in the 1988 Federal Constitution. This process not only transformed the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the Brazilian state but also brought about profound changes in social struggles and in Brazil's self-perception as a multicultural country—potentially advancing, in the future, toward interculturality.

O livro O Movimento Indígena no Brasil: da Tutela ao Protagonismo (1974-1988), organizado pelos pesquisadores da temática indígena Dr. Clovis Antonio Brighenti, professor de História na UNILA, e Egon Dionisio Heck, mestre em Ciências Políticas pela Unicamp e membro do Cimi, é uma coletânea de 13 artigos distribuídos em três partes. Conta também com um prefácio organizado pelo antropólogo João Pacheco de Oliveira, professor titular do Museu Nacional (UFRJ). A obra ocupa importante espaço em uma lacuna temporal na historiografia indigenista brasileira entre o início dos anos 1970 até o advento da Constituição Federal de 1988. É um período crucial da história indígena no Brasil, quando estes estavam sendo violentamente exterminados tanto na dimensão física, pela "modernização" do Brasil nos governos militares, como na dimensão cultural, pelo projeto de lei da integração indígena à comunhão nacional. Este livro analisa como os indígenas no Brasil superaram as noções de tutela estatal e integração e abriram caminho para o reconhecimento da organização social, línguas, costumes, crenças e tradições. A primeira parte é dedicada ao movimento indígena, às assembleias e organizações que ocorreram, e conta com um artigo escrito por Nailton do Povo Pataxó da Bahia, protagonista desse processo. A parte dois é dedicada a conhecer alguns cenários das ações e mobilizações indígenas, em especial pela conquista das terras. O capítulo três é dedicado a analisar as ações do Estado e as mobilizações contra a integração e pela mudança do marco legal na Constituição Federal de 1988. Esse processo não alterou apenas a correlação de indígenas com o Estado brasileiro, mas também provocou mudanças profundas nas lutas sociais e na perspectiva do Brasil em se reconhecer com um pais multicultural, avançando, quem sabe, para a interculturalidade.
