For many years now, France has been implementing water management policies designed to reconcile the balanced sharing of this resource with the preservation of its quality. However, in the face of climate change — which increasingly threatens this balance — and the unprecedented degradation of aquatic biodiversity, the challenges of managing and sharing water are taking on a new dimension. More than ever, this vital resource must be considered a common good. Its equitable distribution has become a real social and political challenge. Resulting of a collective effort involving scientists and water management specialists, this book reviews the current state of knowledge in France. It examines existing strategies for protecting this natural heritage, and offers a critical analysis of the courses of action envisaged by stakeholders to meet current challenges.
