This book exposes institutionalised and inter-personal racism in healthcare and its impact on the lives of Black and Brown people. It is based on the experiences and actions of a group of nurses and midwives who came together as a result of the research project Nursing Narratives: Racism and the Pandemic (UKRI/AHRC). Racism in healthcare damages us all and is a matter of social justice. It affects staff retention, staff health and well-being, and the quality of patient care. In this book, nurses and midwives narrate their experiences of racism and reflect on the successes and difficulties of challenging racism within healthcare institutions. With the overall aim of empowering others, including providing white allies with a deep understanding of how racism operates, the book gives opportunities for critical reflection and encourages us to think about how we can bring about progressive change in practice. The book is an invaluable resource, helping health professionals and students understand the patterns of racism in the health workplace.
