What happens when religion meets culture—when Christianity, the world's most widespread faith (including Catholicism, Protestantism, and Eastern Orthodoxy), encounters Chinese civilization, the largest population on earth shaped by more than five millennia of tradition? Do Chinese Christians who do not worship their ancestors remain "Chinese"? Since the late Ming dynasty, the interaction between Christianity and Chinese society has sparked recurring tensions. This book moves from the value conflicts faced by Chinese Christian believers to Christianity's clashes with late Qing society, and to its political relations with the People's Republic—analyzing, from historical and philosophical perspectives, how these two deep-rooted cultural systems have recognized, exchanged with, and confronted one another.
