More and more schools are under threat of closure due to strained municipal finances and differing opinions on what constitutes quality in education. This book presents an overview of changes in the school structure in Norway, with a particular focus on educational provision in rural areas. It highlights how curricula and school governance affect the school structure, and presents research on key issues that arise when school closures are being considered. These include economic concerns, students' academic and social development, health and school transport, school operations under threat of closure, and the role of the school in local communities and settlement patterns. By drawing on concrete evaluations of school structures in selected municipalities, the reader gains an authentic insight into the dilemmas and difficult trade-offs faced by local communities. The book also illustrates how the current national curriculum (LK20) opens opportunities to take advantage of the strengths of small schools, while also revealing systemic factors that can prevent this potential from being realized. Together, the book offers a comprehensive perspective on small schools in pressured municipalities. The topic is highly relevant today across large parts of the country, as even larger schools in bigger municipalities and counties are increasingly facing the threat of closure. Issues such as travel distance and the school's role in the local community affect everyone. The book is intended for anyone interested in children's schooling and living conditions, including teachers, students, politicians, and parents.

Stadig nye skolar trugast av nedlegging i møte med ein svak kommuneøkonomi og ulike meiningar om kva som gjev kvalitet i opplæringa. Denne boka gjev ei framstilling av endringar i skolestrukturen i Noreg med vekt på skoletilbodet i distrikta. Boka får fram korleis læreplanar og styring av skolen påverkar skolestruktur, og ho presenterer forsking på saker som kjem opp når det er snakk om nedlegging av skolar. Dette gjeld økonomi, elevane si faglege og sosiale læring, helse og skoleskyss, skoledrift under trussel om nedlegging og skolen si rolle for bygd og busetting. Ved å trekkje på konkrete utgreiingar av skolestruktur i nokre kommunar, får lesaren eit autentisk innblikk i dilemma og krevjande avvegingar i lokalsamfunnet. Boka får vidare fram korleis dagens læreplan (LK20) opnar for å kunne utnytte dei små skolane sine fortrinn, samtidig som ho synleggjer strukturar som kan føre til at dette potensialet ikkje blir utnytta. Samla gjev boka eit heilskapleg perspektiv på små skolar i pressa kommunar. Tematikken er i dag aktuell i store delar av landet når stadig større skolar i større kommunar og i fylkeskommunar opplev trusselen om nedlegging. Reise­veg og skolens plass i lokalsamfunnet gjeld alle. Boka rettar seg mot alle med interesse for barns skole- og oppvekstvilkår, så som lærarar, studentar, politikarar og foreldre.
