Sidelining and exclusion are still neglected subjects of study in the historiography of politics, as is the caducity of the public actor. The aim of this book is to identify the historian's sources on the subject, as well as the various ways in which power is sidelined and criticized in configurations of peripherality or even marginalization. We'll also be asking whether the critique of power has always been functional: has the accusation of obsolescence produced results (the elimination of the politician), or has the acceptance of being a man of the past enabled this man to last, to return, to leave something, a trace? Has this category offered observers, historians, any real keys, tools for analysis or reconstruction? The diachronic approach we have chosen does not consist in juxtaposing cases from Antiquity to the present day, but rather in looking for comparisons between periods, in a serene apprehension of trans-historicities. Eleven authors have agreed to contribute to this book, which is organized around three main themes: the first deals with political sidelining as a mode of government. The second part looks at the translation of power into influence, which is seen as an antidote to attrition. FFinally, the third section examines the dialectical relationships between the conditions of renewal, the possibilities of return, and sometimes the imperative of forgetting.
