The first volume of "The History of the University of Warsaw" covers the history of the Warsaw university from its founding in 1816 to the outbreak of World War I. In addition to providing a concise overview of the institution's history, the authors paint vivid portraits of the university's staff and student communities and, particularly important given the dramatic events that have shaped Poland's history over the last two centuries, recount the history of the university's relations with the political authorities. The origins of the University date back to the Duchy of Warsaw, when the School of Law and Administrative Sciences and the Medical School were established in Warsaw. The University was finally established in 1816, becoming the crowning achievement of the educational system of the Kingdom of Poland and an important center of education for the Polish intelligentsia. After the fall of the November Uprising, it was closed down – at that time, only secondary schools existed in Warsaw. In the years 1862–1869, the Main School, although not named a university, essentially fulfilled its role. After the suppression of the January Uprising, the School was transformed into the Russian-language Imperial University of Warsaw. It was often considered by Poles to be a foreign body, but the authors preparing the publication decided that it would be a mistake to omit or marginalize this phase of the University of Warsaw's history. The Imperial University of Warsaw was not completely separated from Polish society: for a long time, most of its students were Polish, and there were also Polish lecturers. The history of the Russian-speaking University of Warsaw is an important part of the history of Russian-Polish relations during that period. In addition, the Imperial University of Warsaw deserves attention as one of the empire's universities with its own achievements. The evacuation of the Russian university to Rostov-on-Don in 1915, when the Russians left the Vistula River region, and its nearly two years of activity there under the name "Warsaw," conclude the first volume of "The History." The three richly illustrated volumes of "The History of the University of Warsaw" are the first attempt in nearly 40 years to present a comprehensive history of the University of Warsaw, covering the history of the university from its inception to the present day.

Tom pierwszy "Dziejów Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego" obejmuje historię warszawskiej uczelni od momentu jej powstania w 1816 roku do wybuchu I wojny światowej. Autorzy, oprócz syntetycznej prezentacji dziejów instytucji, kreślą też plastyczne portrety społeczności pracowników i studentów UW oraz – co szczególnie istotne, zważywszy na dramatyzm losów Polski w ostatnich dwóch stuleciach – opowiadają historię stosunków uczelni z władzami politycznymi. Początki Uniwersytetu sięgają Księstwa Warszawskiego, kiedy utworzono w Warszawie Szkołę Prawa i Nauk Administracyjnych oraz Szkołę Lekarską. Uniwersytet powstał ostatecznie w 1816 roku, stając się zwieńczeniem edukacyjnego systemu Królestwa Polskiego i ważnym ośrodkiem kształcenia polskiej inteligencji. Po upadku powstania listopadowego został zlikwidowany − w Warszawie istniały wówczas już tylko szkoły półwyższe. W latach 1862–1869 Szkoła Główna, choć nienazwana uniwersytetem, pełniła w istocie jego rolę. Po stłumieniu powstania styczniowego Szkołę przekształcono w rosyjskojęzyczny Cesarski Uniwersytet Warszawski. Bywał on często uznawany przez Polaków za ciało obce, jednak przygotowujący publikację autorzy uznali, że błędem byłoby pomijanie lub marginalizowanie tej fazy dziejów UW. Cesarski Uniwersytet Warszawski nie był zupełnie oddzielony od życia polskiego społeczeństwa: przez długi czas większość jego studentów stanowili Polacy, Polacy znajdowali się też wśród wykładowców. Historia rosyjskojęzycznego UW to ważny fragment dziejów rosyjsko-polskich stosunków w tamtym okresie. Poza tym Cesarski Uniwersytet Warszawski zasługuje na uwagę jako jedna z uczelni imperium, mająca swoje osiągnięcia. Ewakuacja rosyjskiego uniwersytetu do Rostowa nad Donem, przeprowadzona w 1915 roku, gdy Rosjanie opuszczali Kraj Przywiślański, i tamtejsza, blisko dwuletnia działalność pod szyldem "warszawskim", zamykają pierwszy tom "Dziejów". Trzy bogato ilustrowane tomy "Dziejów Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego" to pierwsza od blisko 40 lat próba całościowego przedstawienia historii UW obejmująca dzieje uczelni od momentu powstania do czasów współczesnych.
