Academic writing must be learned. It is a demanding genre that both students and academic staff depend on in their academic work—whether they need to understand what they read, communicate what they read, or write themselves. In this anthology, different academic traditions meet. The contributions represent broad disciplinary breadth and, both individually and collectively, create new knowledge about academic writing in professional education programs. The authors present different aspects of academic writing on three levels: writing, support, and structures. The anthology discusses, among other things: How academic environments can strengthen a culture for writing and learning in professional education, How professional support shapes academic writing, professional development, and professional identity, How structures such as co-writing, supervision, and frameworks influence writing. The contributions combine theoretical perspectives with empirical examples from education. The book provides new insight into working methods and an understanding of academic writing as an integrated part of professional education. The anthology is edited by Roar Stokken, professor at the Department of Social Work; Elin Gundersen, adviser at the library; and Kristin Kibsgaard Sjøhelle, Associate Professor at the Department of Language and Literature. All are employed at Volda University College and have researched and taught academic writing in professional education programs. Writing Yourself Into the Profession is aimed at colleagues who work with academic writing in professional education. It may also be relevant for students in professional programs and teachers in upper secondary education.
