Ämnen: Onlineresurser: Sammanfattning: Based on a conference organized by the Société d'histoire et d'épistémologie des sciences du langage, this book studies the documentation and description of Asian languages from a historical and epistemological perspective. The term "Asia" is used here in its broad sense as defined by the Société asiatique, i.e. to encompass an area stretching from the Maghreb to the Far East, the delimitation of which is also examined from a linguistic perspective. As for the linguistic activities taken into consideration, these include, on the one hand, the collection of linguistic data in all its forms (word lists, archives, collections, linguistic surveys, questionnaires, corpora, etc.) and, on the other, the development of tools for representing a language, both synchronically and diachronically: writing systems, grammars, dictionaries, lexicons, translation tools, handbooks, etc. The focus is therefore on a detailed analysis of the linguistic knowledge produced on Asian languages, both inside and outside Europe, with particular attention paid to the contexts in which this knowledge was developed and circulated. Among the topics treated are the contribution of indigenous traditions to the process of grammaticization, the place of Asia in global comparisons of world languages, as well as the materiality of descriptions (translations, printing, etc.).
