Between 1957 and 1962, Gil Evans arranged four albums for Miles Davis and a large orchestra that were to become classics of the genre. After the end of this collaboration, from September 1963 to October 29, 1964, he crossed the studio threshold eight or nine times as part of his contract with producer Creed Taylor and the Verve label. Fifteen tracks were recorded. Twelve were in large formation and three in quartet. Over the years, they will be published in various formats, under the title The Individualism of Gil Evans. Today, this album is regarded as a benchmark in the art of arranging and a pinnacle of the decade's jazz. After a brief biographical sketch, Laurent Cugny's present work first sets out the background to the series of recordings concerned, followed by a list of the main phonographic editions and the corpus of recordings. Each of the twelve large-scale recordings is then described in detail, in the chronological order of their creation.
